Sad state of affairs but its always been the case that something that large is considered as a commercial parcel and if carried in a passenger coach the train guards are in their rights to ask for the fare as the item takes up the space a paying customer could be crammed into ..

Its covered in section II conditions of carriage for luggage, animals and articles byelaws 46 and 47 it states small items can be carried but large items are subject to a charge of approx half the adult fare ...

IT was never a problem with the really old trains - the ones with compartments...

But the main issue with cellos is they are hollow wooden breakable things that I NEVER put in the luggage rack, even when I was travelling on the school bus. I've always had a seat for it or stood with it to keep it protected.

If you travel on a plane you have to buy a seat for it too as the wood will dry out in the luggage hold and a very very expensive instrument will be absolutely ruined.

Ho hum.

I suppose I should have chosen the violin all those years ago!
*grin*
