Angry Rant at Work'mates' : The 'I'm not racist, but...' Brigade [Jan. 27th, 2005|01:16 pm]
Miss Von Trapp
[Mood |angryangry]
[Music |Ministry: Shove]

Work last night was spent mostly converting Jui-ehh!!! to the joys of the big can-type headphones rather than her tinny in-ear painmakers... And also throwing album after album of KMFDM and a bit of Moonspell at her in a vague attempt to wean her off Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth.

It was also spent in the company of the shift manager for a few minutes discussing something potentially dodgy that was suggested at brief...

There is a core group in my team led mostly by two people who are what I call the 'I'm not racist but...' Brigade. They've had a running grumble long term at the one and only moslem on the shift (who happens to be from Cornwall) as he has 'his own prayer room' (like that should ever impact on their lack of religous belief) and because he was unhappy about the xmas decorations over the holidays - as was I - they were shit and the whole season at work was irritatingly tacky... They've also made huge complaints over his wearing once or twice of a t-shirt with an Egypt flag on it (like he complains if they wear English rugby ones) - he's only worn it because he has a girlfriend in Egypt, but hey, perhaps it's an 'immigrant-towelhead-terrorist-atttack-provocation-reason' (their words)...

It's getting ridiculous. There's a rumour flying around that he said something about being proud to die for his religion - I've not got a problem with that - it's his belief and he's allowed to express it:

John 15:13, "Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends."

Dulce Et Decorum Est Pro Patria Mori

Oh for fucks sake - that sentiment lies with every patriotic individual from every religion...

But they're taking it as incitement to terrorism on his part and are getting seriously angry and worked up in a 'non-racist' way. I quote:

"If they give border controls to Europe and let them in I'm taking to the streets" - team member.

What got me REALLY angry last night was, after just such a conversation over fag break, they proposed a team celebration of St Georges Day complete with flag wearing, waving and whatnot in work.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to turn down an excuse for a patriotic piss-up - I'm happy to be any nationality if there's a good party involved - Irish, Australian, whatever... But what fucked me off was that they only want to do this as an underhand way of getting at/protesting at this one individual at work rather than be patriotic about their own country.

The 'St Georges Day' team celebration has a hidden agenda. They've even discussed joining the BNP.

I want no fucking part of it - so I went to the shift manager and forewarned him of what's going on. Trust me, if they do this and wear all their flags and shit I'll be coming in wearing a gay rainbow flag or a peace one or something... AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!

Ok, now for something a little less heavy.

I found Mike's old band site online last night - I took the quiz to see what band member I'm most psychometrically aligned with... I got my own boyfriend lol!!!

If you want a look/listen/giggle* (delete as applicable) then go here:

Seems like the only time people in this country enjoy a good old flag waving is when England are [still] in the Euro/world cup. Don't get me wrong, it's good to see a bit of patriatic pride for a change and up until recent years the only people who were seen with a union jack were skinhead types and royalist grannies. Oh, almost forgot the royal weddings.

Always creeps me out seeing them flying from windows in run-down areas of plymouth... The city is a bit of a backwater at the best of times and I wonder how much of it is genuine patriotism or all-round racism...

Honestly, the people at work are a fair cross section of Plymouth characters - and some of them seriously scare me with their ideas:/

Well once they get rid of him they can start on other undesirables like I dunno maybe goths? punks? Metalheads? ah the long and slippery slope into Neo-fascism...
I do hope they all have fun along the way.

Oh they've already picked on the goths/weirdos... Me and Jui sit pretty much on our own away from all of them and we get foul looks and remarks behind their hands all the fucking time lol!!

Sounds like your management has a problem brewing and is not nipping it in the bud. I so hate office politics and the whole nepotistic, cliquey ways people operate in a work enviroment. Glad your laughing I wouldn't be.
Been in that situation and fought my corner many times.

I really do not have time for discrimination of any kind either: have you thought of putting in a complaint to your union rep? You could say that as nice caring person who is progressive in her thinking and out-look on life, that you find the blatent racism in the office uncomfortable and you worry about the Moslem co-worker who would be offended as it is directed against him. Are these people easy to reason with? If not, then you can pacifly make your aggrievance felt and *tut* call them a bunch of dinosaurs, and walk off: I used to work with a racist, homophobic, trans-phobic, right wing CPN, everytime he shot his mouth of I would walk out of the room and tell him I did not want to hear it. Most of these racist types only shoot their poison when they have an audience, if there are a few of you who are appalled at their comments you could jointly let them know: Also remind them that there is such a thing now as hate-crime and the government takes a very dim view of hate-crime.

I would mention it to the union rep if she weren't really good friends with them:/

At least the shift manager is aware of the situation I suppose and I'm keeping a close eye on things... and also mentioning the situ to other people who I'm friends with on shift...

I'm going to buy a pirate flag for when they do it - if they're allowed - then if anyone asks I will loudly explain my views lol!

However many times I hear about stuff like this, it always surprises me how people can be so fucking stupid over religion/race.

I agree. Sometimes I wish I could thump them over the head and make them see sense... Or at least put them in front of a mirror at some point...

I love you for the post VG!!
I would've done exactly the same for the poor bloke. It's annoying how people don't look at themselves when they speak of others. And I'm amazed at your progressiveness of thought. All artistic people are supposed to be liberated, but coming to real life how many truly are?... I'm gonna post more at the forum from now (as an act of encouragement, lol) ;)

Liberated, yes - but that often simply makes them liberal...

I've grown up supporting CND, world wildlife fund and various causes - and I am pretty much a lefty but sadly, there seems to be a big difference in the artistic community between appearance and activity. Besides which, art is supposed to be dangerous. If you're not activist and forward in supporting causes you may as well just give up lol;)
