One of my favourite places to hide at uni was the library, an ugly 1970s building, yet it has this massive multi-volume dictionary in there, with more words than you could ever hope to use in 10 lifetimes - twas magic, basically. The sad thing: I can't remember any of the super-exotic words, or at least they're not coming to the fore, damn brain.

Oh I know exactly what you're on about there. As a child I was always wanting to know more. The great thing about just reading an encyclopedia like that is, far from just coming up with random info, you have a desire to join the dots, one thing leads to another, and before you know it, it's all knitting together, hopefully creating this strong net of info (oh how we love well-worn metaphors!).
